* * * What's Advent ? * * *

Advent is the period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. Advent means 'Coming' in Latin. This is the coming of Jesus into the world. Christians use the four Sundays and weeks of Advent to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30th, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, this year Advent begins on Sunday November 27th.

There are different ways to count the days of the advent, but the most popular is with an Advent calendar. In fact, the first sign of Christmas in an English home is the children's advent calendar. This particular calendars are a fun way to help children to know when Christmas Eve will arrive; it's an important night for them, because Father Christmas will visit all children bringing gifts.

Do you know what an Advent calendar is?

An Advent calendar is a poster or card with twenty - four small doors, one to be opened each day from December 1st until Christmas Eve. Each door hides a picture. Every morning children open one window of the calendar to see a pretty picture.

This popular tradition arose in Germany.

A legend tells of a poor woman that wanted to give her children something beautiful at Christmas time. She couldn't buy anything because she didn't have any money, but she had an idea and decided to make the calendar. Her children loved the calendars which they got every year, and when her sons was older she decided to make calendars to sell in the shops.

Everybody liked the idea, and now you can buy an Advent calendar in countries all over the world, you can see them on the web, or you can make them for yourself .

In this Advent calendar you can find, every day many activities and pictures, information around the symbols and traditions of Christmas.
